Definition of a DJ from wikipedia: "A disc jockey (also known as DJ or deejay) is a person who selects and plays prerecorded music for an audience."

from the very same article: The main focus of club DJs is on the music they play and how they remix tracks in and out of each other or also just to add a bit of energy to a track. They build their sets by choosing tracks to control the energy level of the crowd and use beatmixing (or "beatmatching") technique for seamless transition between tracks.
A hip-hop disc jockey is a DJ that selects, plays and creates music as a hip-hop artist and/or performer, often backing up one or more MCs.
i challenge you to put a set together as well as Tiesto, Van Dyk, Sharpnel or Steve Aoki.

Yes, we know there are several types of disc jockey, and we infact give you the benefit of the doubt that it is possible for there to be a good, talented DJ, but our point is that generally DJs are very bland, get way too much credit, especially if they are not doing a live set, and can agree that it does not take much to be a good DJ. Hahahah i cant believe we're still talking about this!!

It's pretty simple. If a DJ actually makes their own music, then it's possible that they're somewhat respectable. DJ's that don't make their own music and just throw on records, are generally overrated and over paid, and are extremely low if not at the very bottom of the spectrum of music professions. If I could stand the kind of music most DJ's play at the typical event, I would consider dropping a couple thousand on some DJ gear so I could easily get paid a lot to do very little. Full live bands that actually make their own music might get paid gas money at the same event a lame DJ is paid $300-$500. It's just bogus.

i'm not talking about corporate DJs, and the truth is there's really no place in everett/snoco for you to see what i AM talking about. a talented club dj does a lot more than just "throw on records". there's the order of songs, which IS important to maintain a steady or smoothly-changing feel to the set. the techniques involved in switching songs, like beatmatching, slip-cueing and various spin techniques are hard to do (i've tried, it's hard even with digital decks, let alone real vinyl/CDJs). add to that the sampling, breaks and vinyl tech like scratching and fading and you have a lot to work with. it's not just throwing records on or setting an ipod on shuffle, and if you hear a real dj you'll know the difference.

There must not be very many "real" DJs then.. I think we already agreed that some DJs can be good, it's just that a DJ just doesn't hold water compared to a real musician. DJ's, unless they make their own music, are not musicians. Real musicians, and other people in the entertainment business that actually make their own artwork just deserve more respect that's all. and why do you assume we've never been outside of the everett area?

someone should write an article for CrunchyCo's articles section about the whole DJ thing. I need more articles for my article section and I don't have time to write them all! DJ's: support or disapprove? or an in depth analysis of both sides. Someone write something, I want more articles!

i'm not talking about corporate DJs, and the truth is there's really no place in everett/snoco for you to see what i AM talking about.... UM. Actually, aren't "Tiesto, Van Dyk, Sharpnel or Steve Aoki" corporate djs? hmmmm. I do agree there really is no place in snoco for GOOD djs. The techniques you describe like beatmatching are difficult for people with no sense of rhythm! No, that said, djing depends on the genre. In some cases the music is so well mixed itself that it needs no, and literally has no room for mixing in samples, scratching, etc. It is just someone standing there beatmatching the beginnings and endings. Depending on genre also, it really comes down to the talent to discover and share great music with others. It started out on radio and moved to the dancefloor. Before myspace and the internet most of us music geeks actually had to give some credit to djs. There are always a few audiowhores who literally will stand on the dancefloor and just listen to the music, for the sake of discovering a new tune. But the ability to identify and select a good set is NOT musicianship. Anyone can do it, but I do find the best djs make their own music too, and play sets depending on what the promotor of the event wants. This is Heide, Gabe's sis, and I think (well, I HOPE) I made some impression on him musically. He used to make fun of me listening to electronica way back in the day... but he did find his own way and his own genre that is totally different than what most of my friends are up to. Actually Gabe, I'd like to write an article for you because I know LOTS of djs and electronic musicians and have had this conversation so many times I could puke it on the page. Luvs, Heide p.s.: Here's a REALLY good DJ. I saw him live and he kicks ass, running back and forth on stage from 4 turntables to another set of 2 turntables, literally making the records TALK. Now, that is musicianship, IMHO. (He also makes comics.) I give you, Kid Koala: www.myspace.com/kidkoalaonesandtwos
